Is it OKAY to eat SHELLFISH?
Non-Christians often accuse Christians of violating the Old Testament law because we eat shellfish (clams, prawns, lobster, etc.) Leviticus plainly prohibits this. What they do not understand is that there are three types of law in the Bible: civil law; ceremonial law; and the moral law.
Civil law is given by our government. Civil law includes health laws, business regulations, contract law, and other laws that keep people safe and ensure commerce operates fairly. These laws change, depending on the circumstances. At the time of Leviticus God was the head of Israel's government, so He made the civil laws. Those laws do not apply today. Our various levels of government have the responsibility for making our civil laws today.
The ceremonial law applied to the nation of Israel and was about their relationship with God. It was centered on the sacrificial system and the Temple. With Christ's death on the cross those were done away with, and the ceremonial law no longer applies.
This leaves the moral law, which includes but is not limited to the Ten Commandments. The moral law describes God's character. All of the moral law, except the sabbath, was reiterated in the New Testament. As God's image bearers we are to exhibit God's character. That means the moral law still applies today.
!!! It's Okay To Eat Shellfish !!!
Loving God and obeying God are the same thing.
Love is an action, not a feeling. Loving God means obeying God. Loving our neighbors means doing things for them (sacrificually if needed) to meet their greatest need. Everyone's greatest need is Jesus Christ, so telling others about sin, hell, and salvation through trusting in Jesus Christ is the greatest love we can have for anyone.
